It’s a great pub, a proper pub, of a kind that’s almost extinct. Crisp, smiling, friendly service. Coal fires. Railway & Wolves FC memorabilia clutter the walls. A poster advertising A Night with Steve Bull. No music or games. Batham’s Best Bitter, Holden’s Black Country Mild, Golden Glow and Bitter on draught. Ace porky scratchings. Soft baps with roast pork & crackling. What more do you want?
‘It’s not at it’s best,’ said the man by the bar, gesturing at the Batham’s pump.’Too fresh. The cask’s only just been opened. It needs time to settle down. It’ll be best on tomorrow and Friday. Finished on Saturday. Then there’ll be a new delivery on Monday.’
It seemed pretty ok to me. There’s a sophistication of which I never even dreamed.
You can find the Great Western practically underneath a line of railway arches, opposite the old, handsome, sadly derelict station. Get there via the subway from new station and city center.
